Triclosan, an antibacterial ingredient found in many common handsoaps, toothpastes, deodorants and sanitizers, has been in the news lately with researchers alleging it may impair muscle function.
Yet, triclosan is an effective antimicrobial ingredient used in hand soaps for the food processing environment, such as Birko’s Big Red™. We take a proactive approach and constantly review information regarding the effectiveness and safety of all raw materials. We make changes to formulations where appropriate to maintain the right balance between efficacy and user safety.
In fact, the vast majority of research indicates that triclosan, when used at levels presently employed in commercial products, is safe. For example, the American Cleaning Institute, quoting a 2011 review by the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, noted that the “use of triclosan at a maximum concentration of 0.3% in toothpastes, hand soaps, body soaps/shower gels and deodorant sticks is considered safe.” Triclosan’s safety has been confirmed by Health Canada and Environment Canada.
