Webinar Overview

Wet strength resins (WSR) are commonly used in tissue manufacture but are also used in other paper grades such as specialty papers where wet tensile strength can be of great importance. This is a growth area in the paper industry, paper grades where they are used include facial tissues, kitchen and hand towels, wipers, napkins and specialty grades such as soap wrapper, liquid packaging, tea bags, coffee filters, currency, laminating grades and many other paper grades.

Polyaminopolyamide-epichlorohydrin (PAE) resin is the dominant chemistry used to manufacture paper with wet strength properties. Since their development in the late 1950s, the first generation (G1) resins have proven to be one of the most cost-effective technologies available to provide wet strength to paper. In recent years, regulatory directives and sustainability initiatives from various organisations have led to the development of cleaner and safer PAE resins and paper products. Initial efforts in this area focused on improving worker safety and reducing the impact of PAE resins on the environment. This led to the development of second generation (G2) products containing significantly reduced levels of 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol (1,3-DCP) and 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD), potentially carcinogenic by-products formed during the manufacturing process of PAE resins. As the levels of these by-products decreased, the environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) profile of PAE resins and paper products improved.

Traditionally, the Indian market has been using G1 products and so there is an opportunity to improve the regulatory and sustainability profile of the products being used by switching to the latest generation of G2 products.

Solenis is a leader in the innovation and development of G2 wet strength resins and the latest products can be a safer, more sustainable and cost-effective replacement for G1 products. With expansion of our manufacturing footprint in India Solenis will be producing the latest high performance G2 wet strength resins in India. This will allow paper and tissue producers to improve operator safety, sustainability and regulatory compliance. They can also help meet the European BfR recommendations.
