Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s Los Angeles Refinery Receives 2024 Solenis Sustainability Award for Innovative Water Conservation Efforts

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WILMINGTON, Del. (USA) — Solenis, a leading global provider of water and hygiene solutions, is proud to honor Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s Los Angeles Refinery with a 2024 Solenis Sustainability Award. This recognition highlights the refinery’s commitment to operational excellence and sustainability through the successful implementation of a custom chemical treatment program to manage iron in the recycled water makeup stream used in its cooling water systems.

The treatment program addressed critical challenges posed by the high iron content of the recycled water sourced from a third-party water reuse facility. Solenis collaborated with the Marathon team to develop a customized solution to optimize water use and chemical performance.

Sustainability Achievements
  • Water Conservation: Reduced water usage by 357 million gallons per year
  • Cost Savings: Delivered a total operational cost savings of approximately $1.5 million annually

“Marathon Petroleum’s Los Angeles Refinery exemplifies how innovation and collaboration can drive measurable sustainability outcomes,” said Chris Neer, Vice President and General Manager of Solenis’ Industrial Solutions business in North America. “Implementation of the custom solution helped the refinery to achieve notable resource conservation and cost savings. This project demonstrates the power of aligning operational efficiency with environmental stewardship, and we are proud to partner with Marathon on their sustainability journey.”

Solenis’ chemical treatment program enabled the refinery to improve the performance of its cooling systems by doubling the allowable iron limit without risk of deposits and by allowing the systems to operate at higher cycles, which significantly reduced water consumption.

Established in 2020, the Solenis Sustainability Awards recognize projects that excel in reducing water use, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste as well as optimizing raw material utilization. Marathon’s Los Angeles Refinery exemplifies these principles through its outstanding achievements and innovative approach to resource management.
